Langdon Divers Gallery Exhibit: Paul Krikau

Langdon Divers Gallery Exhibit: Paul Krikau In-Person

Visit the Langdon Divers Community Gallery throughout January to view the exhibit "Unsteady Witness" by artist Paul Krikau.

An artist reception is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 8 from 5:30-7 pm.

Artist Statement:  I look for things that are commonplace in nature, our bodies, and our belongings, and then get uncomfortably close to them. I look for the hidden colors and lights within people, nature, and things to find the freshness, vitality, or grotesqueness in each subject. My goal, often, is to show only part of the whole and hope that we see things more clearly for the effort.

Exhibit Statement: Unsteady Witness is a chaotic mix of close-up paintings and melted crayon works that move between pollinators, wildflowers, human eyes, mythologized nature, and alcohol vessels. The subjects don’t try to fit into a single category—nature, humans, personification, and everyday objects all show up side by side. What connects them is the way they’re seen: up close, cropped tight, and focused on color, light, and texture.

Many of these works come from the artist’s immediate surroundings, especially the backyard and the home, with some surrealistic exceptions. By narrowing in on singular objects or portions of a whole rather than the bigger image, the paintings reflect a kind of unsteady attention. The result is a record of looking and seeing that’s personal, imperfect, and deliberately unsettled.
