Perfect for teachers and parents, The Magic Jar empowers children to open up about big emotions, builds community in the classroom, and strengthens relationships at home. When Matthew’s beloved family dog, Mr. Cooper, disappears, he struggles with big feelings that follow him to school. During circle time, his teacher introduces "The Magic Jar," a simple activity that helps children share and name their emotions. Through this practice, Matthew and his classmates learn to express their feelings, listen to one another, and build empathy. Rooted in Hoffmann’s own classroom experience, The Magic Jar was created during her first year of teaching in Milwaukee, where she used it daily to foster connection and better understand her students’ behavior.

Sandra D. Hoffmann is a Brazilian-American author, former teacher, and journalist. A kid at heart, she is passionate about children and education. She now lives in Wisconsin, with her family and two pets, and works as a public librarian. Hoffmann is a former 4K teacher at Riverside Elementary School in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
