History at Home In-Person / Online

In 1934 and 1954, unionized workers at the Kohler plant in Sheboygan went on strike. The second strike lasted almost a decade as the company fought hard to prevent workers from winning a fair contract.  Labor historian Jon Shelton walks through the historical context for each strike and how it impacted both the community in and around Sheboygan as well as national politics. Jon Shelton is Professor and Chair of Democracy and Justice Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.  He is the author of two books, most recently The Education Myth: How Human Capital Trumped Social Democracy in 2023.

History at Home programs focus on stories about the area's past every month. Programs are held on the second Thursday of every month at 6 pm in the McLane Room. The programs are free. Many History at Home programs are captured on video and shared on the library's YouTube channel. That link can be found at fdlpl.org/miss-program.
